History.Cho Chang was born c. 1979. She entered Hogwarts in 1990 and was sorted into Ravenclaw. In 1993, she joined the Ravenclaw Quidditch team as their Seeker, but initially had problems with injuries. Cho is very popular, and often has a group of friends around her. Cho has been a Tutshill Tornados fan since she was six years old (PA13, GF22, OP12).
Harry saw Cho for the first time when his Gryffindor team was about to play a match with Ravenclaw. His reaction, which surprised him a little, was that she was very pretty. She has long black hair. As that school year went by, he developed a crush on her. At the start of the 1994-95 school year, when the Triwizard Tournament was announced, he imagined himself winning and seeing her face shining with admiration for him. Cho seemed somewhat sensitive to his feelings, or perhaps she is just a particularly kind person, because she didn't join in when the rest of the students treated Harry badly after he became a school champion.
When it was revealed that Harry was expected to ask a girl to the Yule Ball, he spent days trying to work up the courage to ask Cho to go with him. But when he finally did ask her, she had to turn him down because she'd already said yes to Cedric Diggory. Even in this awkward situation, though, Cho was very kind to Harry. Clearly, even though her affection lay elsewhere, she considered Harry to be a friend.
Harry and Cho in Madam Puddifoot's, OP25 Cho and Cedric became a couple after the Yule Ball, much to Harry's chagrin, and they walked around the school hand in hand. Harry's jealousy kept him from acting on the advice Cedric gave him about the golden egg until it was almost too late. In the second task, she served as hostage for Cedric to rescue, spending several hours deep under the lake in a bewitched sleep.
Cho was badly affected by the death of Cedric. She was often seen crying for no apparent reason. When she returned to school in September 1995, she was still struggling with her grief, but also with the beginnings of romantic feelings toward Harry. He didn't realize it at first, especially when their first encounter of that school year, aboard the Hogwarts Express, didn't exactly go well--Harry had just been sprayed all over with Stinksap. Even so, their romance built over the next months.
When the DA was started, Cho joined along with her friend, Marietta Edgecombe, and was in fact the member who suggested the acronym, although Ginny Weasley supplied the name itself. Cho was one of the worst of the DA at learning Expelliarmus, although this may have been solely due to nerves at Harry's presence (OP18). Cho said she'd never been able to learn stunning before joining the DA, that Harry was a really good teacher, then kissed him under the mistletoe December 1995 (OP21). She was one of the quicker DA members at learning the Patronus Charm, since she was able to summon a corporeal Patronus (hers is a swan), but didn't take it seriously (OP27).
Cho and Harry went on a date into Hogsmeade on Valentine's Day, 1996, but in Harry's words, it was "a complete fiasco." Cho tried to make Harry jealous by telling him that Roger Davies had asked her out, but all it did was confuse Harry. When he tried to tell her about his promise to meet Hermione (for an interview with Rita Skeeter rather than anything social, as it turned out), Cho displayed jealousy herself, as Harry hadn't been very deft in trying to tell Cho about it. They parted on bad terms, but after The Quibbler interview came out, Cho made up with Harry for a while (OP26).
The fatal blow to Harry's romantic relationship with Cho was dealt after Marietta Edgecombe betrayed Dumbledore's Army to Umbridge. Cho came to Harry and pleaded Marietta's case, arguing that Marietta's treachery had had extenuating circumstances. Loyalty and keeping one's word are very important to Harry - witness his fight against the basilisk in CS and the situation with Grawp in OP - so Cho's argument for Marietta angered rather than impressed him. Harry pointed out that Ron Weasley's position was the same as Marietta's, and that Ron had kept faith. When Cho then not only didn't acknowledge Harry's point, but instead argued that Hermione's anti-treachery jinx had been unethical, Harry defended Hermione, and again he and Cho parted on bad terms, this time for good (OP28).
Cho never approached Harry afterward to try to patch things up. Harry, for his part, had his last Occlumency lesson immediately after their quarrel, which left him in a state of emotional turmoil for weeks, completely swamping any reaction to the breakup.
After losing to Gryffindor in the final match of 1995-96, Cho threw her broom to the ground in a fit (OP31). She began dating fellow Ravenclaw Michael Corner after Ginny dumped him (OP38).
